Lantern House B&B.
A super bed and breakfast in the heart of Dorchester.
DORCHESTER – SOME OF THE GREAT THINGS TO SEE AND DO:
Maiden Castle -
The country’s largest and most impressive Iron Age hillfort.
Maumbury Rings -
The country’s finest Roman amphitheater.
The Roman Town House -
The country’s best example of such a building.
Thomas Hardy -
Durnovaria to the Romans (a British Tribal City), Casterbridge to Thomas Hardy.
Dorchester is the birthplace of one of English literature’s greatest poets and novelists. He was born in 1840 in a small cottage built by his father, a stonemason and local builder. Hardy’s Cottage is situated in Higher Bockhampton on the outskirts of Dorchester and is open to the public. Thomas Hardy’s grave is in Stinsford Church; Stinsford is a small hamlet to the east of Dorchester next to the famous, fine Georgian manor of Kingston Maurward. Only Hardy’s heart was buried in this grave, his body is interred in Poet’s Corner, Westminster Abbey.
Dorchester and the surrounding countryside is bursting with locations used by Hardy in his novels (often under his Wessex names), from Hangman’s Cottage in ‘The Withered Arm’ – located by the Roman Town house, to Barclays Bank in South Street – the residence of The Mayor of Casterbridge.
Prince Charles -
The future King is a frequent visitor to observe the developments at Poundbury. Poundbury, the Prince’s vision, is influencing town planners world-wide.
Brewery Square -
A wonderful development of the old Eldridge Pope Brewery site. With an internationally recognised design team, such as Sir Terence Conran; the site will have the country’s first solar powered railway station and its first puffing clock.
Museums a plenty -
The County Museum, Dinosaur Museum, Tutankhamun Exhibition Museum, Teddy Bear Museum and Military Keep Museum to name but a few.
Skate Park -
One of the south’s best Skateparks for the younger Durnovarians.
Zorbing -
If you are crazy enough, you can even Zorb in Dorchester.
This is by no means the definitive list of things to do, every year we have the Dorchester Carnival and an amazing line up of world wide talent attending the Dorchester Arts week. There are many clubs and societies with things going on all year round. We even have Ghost Walks and our own Witch’s Market and Ball.
A short car journey can take you to Lulworth Cove and Castle, Durdle Door, Abbotsbury Gardens and Swannery, Cerne Abbas Giant, The Maize Maze, Monkey World, Tank Museum, Sherbourne Castle, Corfe Castle, Weymouth and Portland, Bournemouth,…………………… the list goes on.
